Diet for a Nursing Mom
Nursing mothers need a breastfeeding diet plan that accomplishes two things. First, moms want to make sure that their babies are being nourished adequately. At the same time, moms may want to try and drop some of the extra weight that is normal to gain in pregnancy.
It is possible to achieve both of these goals by establishing a breastfeeding diet plan that actually works and is easy to follow. It is not advisable to lower your calorie intake too much because taking in too few calories may decrease your milk supply. Keep in mind that breastfeeding moms actually require 200-500 additional calories each day just to maintain their current weight.
What To Eat
Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day in order to produce enough breast milk. You can also drink 100 percent fruit juice and low-fat milk.
The good news for breastfeeding moms is that snacking is great. In fact, a great breastfeeding diet plan can be built around enjoying a small 300 calorie meal every three or four hours, instead of three larger meals.
Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables every day. Green leafy and yellow vegetables are an important component of any healthy eating plan. Fruits will provide you and baby with Vitamin C, which is essential for good health. Fruits and vegetables provide you and your baby with an abundance of healthy nutrients. Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
Whole grains are a wonderful addition to your diet. Try brown rice, 100 percent whole wheat bread or quinoa.
Try to include three servings of protein each day. DHA rich foods such as wild salmon, sardines and eggs will promote baby’s brain development. Make every effort to avoid high mercury foods such as tilefish and mackerel.
The important thing to remember is to eat sensibly and be sensitive to your baby’s reactions to what you eat. If your baby doesn’t seem to be reacting well to certain additions to your diet, simply stop eating the suspected food and see if things improve.
